For our December 2023 outing, Troop 46 spent the night on the USS Cobia which is stationed at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He USS Cobia battled in World War II and served in the Pacific. During her service, she sank 13 Japanese vessels. We toured the ship and slept onboard the first night. On the second night of the outing we stayed in a cabin and watched the movie Hunt for Red October which was about a Soviet submarine crew trying to defect to the US in a silent submarine. We also had time for games and rank advancements.
We all got to take turns going into the torpedo tubes. We would climb up, slide in, and then the tour guide would shut the door. Once the door closed, it was perfectly silent and totally dark.
Our tour guide gave us the opportunity to visit the control room and learn how to use the controls. We each took turns at each station.
After spending the night on the ship, we had a chance to tour the submarine topside and tour the museum. The maritime museum has all types of ships, and many were made in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It was a mild day for December and we were able to spend quite a bit of time checking out the guns on the ship.
We all took turn sitting in the guuner’s chair and got to experience what it was like to use submarine weaponry.
