On the weekend of January 26, 2024, Troop 46 did winter camping at Blackwell Forest Preserve. The campground was nice with all the trees and a blanket of snow. The temperatures were above normal, and the snow was beginning to melt. We did our best to remove snow from under and around our tent openings.
We built fires to keep ourselves warm due to the cold and wet. We also used the open fires for cooking. This was a challenging campout, and we all learned a lot. The warm weather quickly melted the snow and created a lot of mud. Keeping tents and our equipment clean and dry was not easy. I proud that nearly every member of our troop stayed through the weekend. It was definitely a camping trip to remember.
The weather was cold, but the food was delicious. Here one of the scouts is showing off a breakfast quiche prepared over a fire in a Dutch oven.
We took a hike up Mount Hoy at Blackwell. It’s about a gain of 180 feet. We had a great view of the surrounding Warrenville area. It was a great hike and a good opportunity to get away from our muddy campsite.
After packing up our gear, heading home, and showering, we all met up for racing at K1 in Addison, IL. The cars there are really fast, and everyone had a great time racing the curvy course.
