A majority of the Troop went to Owasippe Scout Reservation, located in Twin Lake, Michigan, from 06/26/2021 to 07/03/2021, for summer camp. The Camp staff provided food for every meal, and we dined in a large tent behind the dining hall. We setup camp at Camp Blackhawk, were we had to share an outhouse with a few other campsites.
Unfortunately, there was an infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars at camp. They were everywhere, eating all the leaves from the trees.
On 6/27 we had our swim test and orientation of camp. Breakfast was dry foods, hamburgers for lunch, and a lasagna for dinner at the dining hall. Fire bowl was in the evening with skits performed by camp staff.
On 6/28, we had a modest eggs, sausage, and hash browns for breakfast, soft shell tacos for lunch, and gyros with sweet potato fries for dinner. We began work on our Merit Badges as our week of summer camp began. The adult leaders entered a cooking competition that had to have an orange or orange flavoring in the food. Mr Scarpelli entered the contest representing Troop 46 with a chicken-onion-orange zest meal made in Dutch oven. Unfortunately, Mr Scarpelli’s delicious meal did not win. (Booooo)
One event was a scoutmaster belly flop competition that Mr. Boyd dressed up as a pirate named Greybeard. Unfortunately, we did not win that contest, but all participants had fun.
On 6/29 we had French toast and bacon for breakfast, hot dogs and fries for lunch, and turkey “coins” and potatoes for dinner. We continued working on Merit Badges. Troop 46 wins the Dixie cup boiling water contest.
On 6/30, we had potatoes and biscuits for breakfast (yuk), chicken salad wraps for lunch, and beef with mashed potatoes for dinner. We continued working on Merit Badges. Although we lost the fur trader competition, Troop 46 was in the lead to win the Camp Cup.
On 7/1, we egg and cheese omelets for breakfast, sub sandwiches for lunch, and hamburgers with beans for dinner. Everyone continued their work on Merit Badges. Although we won the balloon toss competition, we found out that our score for the Camp Cup shifted by one point, which put us in second place.
On 7/2, we had egg muffin sandwiches with sausage for breakfast, ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch, and beef stew and apple turnovers for dinner. Everyone completed their Merit Badge work, and we had Fire bowl that evening. Troop 46 performed Bobo the Monkey skit at Fire bowl.
Daily we observed the flag ceremony in the morning and evening, and on 7/2 Troop 46 participated in the flag lowering ceremony.
There were plenty of Merit Badges awarded as well as partials given. Troop 46 came out on top and won the Camp Cup.
All who attended summer camp at Owasippe Scout Reservation enjoyed the experience.
